HL7 Hellas took a decisive step towards strengthening interoperability in healthcare by formally establishing the HL7 Hellas FHIR Workgroup during the Athens Digital Health Week 2025 (January 27–31). The primary objective of this new working group is to create and continuously develop the Greek HL7 FHIR Core, fully aligned with international and European standards.
Throughout the sessions, the latest advances in the HL7 FHIR standard were presented, and valuable expertise was drawn from similar initiatives aimed at creating FHIR Implementation Guides and Workgroups in other countries. Participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss practical solutions to both the technical and organizational challenges surrounding the implementation and wider adoption of FHIR within the Greek context.
There was also a strong focus on achieving cross-border data exchange, in conjunction with European Union initiatives such as the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The discussions highlighted the benefits that may arise for patients, healthcare professionals, and policymakers through a shared, harmonized adoption of HL7 FHIR standards.
With this new initiative, HL7 Hellas is committed to continuing its educational and informational activities for healthcare professionals, technology companies, and all interested parties. The goal is to ensure the effective national implementation of HL7 FHIR, facilitating the Greek healthcare system’s transition to a more digitally informed and interoperable future. In so doing, Greece aims to play a leading role in the digital transformation of healthcare, positioning itself at the forefront of European developments.
